Centenary celebrations

Last weekend we set out to celebrate our clubs 100th birthday 1916 to 2016 and that we did in style, with over 200 children turning up on Friday night for the Liam Heaney and Doyle/Mulholland under 12 tournament followed by a youth disco the weekend got off to a great start, well done to the rock who won the Doyle/Mulholland memorial cup and to Galbally who won the Liam Heaney memorial cup these cups were presented to the teams in memory of a sad time in our clubs history.

On Saturday morning over 100 cyclists took to the roads for our 100k and 50k centenary cycle routes, the sun stayed out and everyone got back in one piece, congratulations to all who took part and well done to the Rock committee and all the helpers and Stewarts who made the cycle possible. The celebrations continued on Saturday evening in the marquee with a fork supper, followed by our championship chat show with teamtalk radio as past Derry and Tyrone players took to the stage to analysis Sunday’s game and talk about big clashes between the 2 teams back in the day. Thanks to all our special guests for making it an entertaining show and a big thank you to JD country for supplying the PA system and live music.

To finish of the weekend we had a remarkable parade that will live long in our memories as Cloughfin Pipe Band led all our teams men and women from under 8s right up to seniors in there rock colours from the village down to the chapel for the centenary club mass, the sense of pride in the community really was breathtaking. Thank you to all the readers the choir and fr McAleer for a delightful celebratory mass.

Well done to the whole community all the club members and the Rock committee for making it a memorable weekend. Now roll on our centenary gala at the end of the year as we continue to celebrate the past 100 years and reminisce on the good memories and the sad.
